Probing the gene pools
1980
Nine of the twenty-one new lines of bread wheat in CIMMYT's 1979 international bread wheat screening nursery have been developed by wheat breeders of CIMMYT and Oregon State University (USA). This was accomplished by a field-based method for crossing spring wheat with winter wheat. More than 1500 new spring x winter crosses are made each year, and the contributions of genes from one pool to the other are to be seen in higher yields and improved disease resistance in selections in each type of wheat.
