Experiments yield harvest [of mussels]

A project for harvesting New Zealand horse mussels for export to Japan commenced in May 1983 in the extensive horse mussel bed on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula off Kuaotuna, Rings and Matarangi Beaches. The article looks at catch figures and diving requirements and problems. It concludes that a hard hat dive fishery for horse mussels may be uneconomic and impractical.
