Results are presented concerning the physical properties of soils under different treatments in a number of long-term field experiments. Field infiltration tests as well as laboratory determinations of bulk density, pore-size distribution, saturated hydraulic conductivity, structure etc. were performed. An agrophysical index including the results of all these determinations was calculated, and it is interpreted as a synthetic expression of the physical status of the soil. Data in figures 1-3 show that adequate fertilization has significant positive effects on the physical status of the soil, these effects representing a secondary, indirect, contribution of fertilizers to increasing soil productivity, and being due to increased development of the root system.
