Soil erosion in the Western Usambara mountains of Tanzania
1984
Buch, M.W. (Regensburg Univ. (Germany, F.R.). Inst. fuer Geographie, Abt. Physische Geographie)
During a six-week visit an attempt was made to gain insight into the differentiated processes of soil erosion in the Western Usambara mountains of Tanzania using simple field and laboratory tests. The study focussed in particular on the degree of denudation, which is of importance in making a medium to long-term assessment of the agricultural bearing capacity of the region. However, the investigation also revealed a number of eco-pedological changes induced by the intervention of man into the natural ecosystem of the mountainous forest. Finally, the possibility of stabilizing the ecological situation in the Western Usambara mountains using the eco-farming system was discussed on the basis of the field and laboratory tests.
