[Women between modernness and tradition: Ecuador's country women in a development process]

Although Ecuador has made great efforts to improve the situation of its rural population, the role of the woman in rural development has, so far, hardly been appreciated. In order to be able to carry out successful programs designed to integrate the rural women into the national development process, various measures would have to be initiated, as for instance, fundamental research on the problematic of the rural women, with particular emphasis on their economic function. In addition, schemes of participation would have to be conceived with the aim to have them participate actively in decision making process. Otherwise there would be a danger of consolidation of the present social structure that is marked by machismo, which reserves to the rural woman exclusively the role of reproduction without acknowledging her economic status.
