German. In Schleswig-Holstein volunteer barley was observed on rape fields in many years but the occurrence varied from year to year. The importance of volunteer barley in rape fields on the following wheat crop with respect to transference of foot rot diseases, was investigated on three locations in Schleswig-Holstein in two successive seasons. The results revealed, that the infection of the wheat crop following rape by Gaeumannomyces graminis increased when volunteer barley was present in rape. With respect to infection by Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides the differences were not as pronounced. A chemical treatment with the herbicid Kerb 50 W in late autumn against volunteer barley did not have expected success. A control of volunteer barley should, therefore, be carried out as early as possible in order to avoid any emergence of barley in winter rape
