Effect of various triazole fungicides on growth and lipid metabolism of Fusarium moniliforme as well as on gibberellin contents in culture filtrates of the fungus

The triazole fungicides triadimenol, etaconazol, diclobutrazol, bitertanol and paclobutrazol (0.0001 mol/l) retarded the increase in dry weight of Fusarium moniliforme as follows: etaconazol over paclobutrazol over diclobutrazol over bitertanol over triadimenol. At a concentration of 0.00001 mol/l, only bitertanol and etaconazol reduced dry weight increase by 15 per cent. All five fungicides diminished the production of gibberellin-like substances as measured by gibberellin content assay of the fungal culture filtrates. Paclobutrazol reduced the specific activity of gibberellin-like substances by 38 per cent, diclobutrazol by 29 per cent, etaconazol, bitertanol and triadimenol by 24 per cent. The triazole derivatives markedly interfered with ergosterol biosynthesis in mycelia of F. moniliforme. Thin layer chromatographic as well as gas chromatographic analysis revealed that ergosterol biosynthesis was inhibited, thus leading to an accumulation of ergosterol precursors containing C-14 and C-4-methyl groups. Fungicide treatment also caused an appreciable reduction of triglyceride contents. Thin layer chromatographic separation of phospholipids from fungicide-treated F. moniliforme mycelia showed reduced levels of diphosphatidyl glycerine (except bitertanol), phosphatidyl ethanolamine and phosphatidyl serine
