Electrocuting light traps evaluted for the control of house flies

The trapping rate of black light (UV) electrocuting traps in the laboratory depends on the searching activity of the house flies, Musca domestica L., and their receptivity to the light, which is affected by physiological parameters (hunger, kind of nutrition, age and sex) an by environmental parameters like other subjects in the room. Various modifications of the traps claimed to improve the efficacy (e.g. light-reflecting electrode) showed no effect. Various trap types were tested on farms and the number of flies caught in the traps were related to population size and number of recruited and lost flies per day. The number of trapped flies was small compared to all these parameters. Traps were tested with the light switched on and off every second day. The light increased number of caught house flies 2.5-4 times and number of stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans) 6-11 times. UV-light traps are not suitable for fly control on farms
