Conservation priority for Durgapur forested area of Mymensingh, Bangladesh

A study was made in the Durgapur forested area, north and north eastern part of the Mymensingh Civil District, from February 84 to December 84 to ascertain the present faunal composition including the possibilities of the occurrence of Hispid Hare, Caprolagus hispidus and Pygmy Hog, Sus sylvatica. Though some good evidence were found, the presence of these two animals is yet to be confirmed. Information was gathered by interviewing the local people and personal observations. During the total 176 field hours of work there 27 mammalian species, including the tiger Panthera tigris as an occasional visitor, 121 bird species, 27 reptilian and 6 amphibian species were found. During the recent past human interference has brought the forest to the edge of extinction. As a result, the wildlife of the area is seriously effected. So the urgent need for developing a conservation plan is unavoidable for1617the welfare of the local people as well as the wildlife.
