The effect of inoculum levels of Meloidogyne javanica Treub, viz. O, 10,100,500,1000,5000 and 10,000 juveniles per plant on the growth of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) incidence of root-knot and population of nematode in soil after 60 days was studied under pot culture conditions. The incidence of root-knot on tomato, and subsequent population of nematode in soil increased but shoot growth decreased gradually in response to increasing inoculum levels. The number of galls and eggmasses per gram of root and fresh root weight increased linearly with the increase of inoculum levels. The number of galls and eggmasses per gram of root and fresh root weight increased linearly with the increase of inoculum levels up to 1000 larvae per plant but reduced thereafter. The relationship of inoculum level with gall index and population of nematodes in soil was positive but inverse with shoot weight and weight.
