Utilization of sunflower straw and subabul-meal in complete diets for crossbred bulls

Three complete diets (mash) containing 50% paddy straw (control; diet 1), 50% sunflower straw (sole source of roughage; diet 2), 30% sunflower straw and 20% subabul-meal (containing leaves, twigs, pods and fine stems; diet 3) were tested in digestion and metabolic trials on 3 fistulated crossbred bulls, using a 3 x 3 latin-square design. The voluntary intake of dry ma2048tter was not significantly different among the diets. The digestibility of dry matter and organic matter were significantly higher on diet 2 and 3. Crude protein and crude fibre digestibilities were higher on diet 2, and ether extract and nitrogen-free extract were higher on diet 3. The animals on all the experimental diets were on positive nitrogen, calcium and phosphorus balances. Digestible crude protein content was highest on diet 2 and lowest on control diet. Total digestible nutrients were lowest on control diet and comparable on diets 2 and 3. All the nitrogen fractions (except food and protozoal nitrogen) in the rumen liquor were higher on diet 2.
