[Rotated meadows in Northern Italy]

After a brief description of the pedo-climatic environment North of the River Po in Italy, the main aspects and role of cultivated forages are considered, with particular emphasis, on temporary meadows. The progress which was registered, and the changes which occurred in the agricultural world from the nineteen-fifties to the present day, are discussed. Since temporary meadows appear to have important functions for the maintenance of soil fertility and in the economy of many farms, their possible future is considered and the means to make them more productive and competitive are suggested
