Effect of color properties of spheres on their attractiveness for Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) flies in the field

Captures of wild Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) flies to sticky-coated, 7.0 cm diameter spheres of 7 different colors suspended in host and nonhost trees were analysed in respect to the color properties of the spheres. It was found that yellow was the most attractive color, followed by red, orange, black and green, while white and blue were the least attractive. The observed color preference depended primarily on the specific wavelengths (hue) of the colors tested, while the total reflected light (brightness) of them and most probably the degree the spheres contrasted to the foliar background, had a minor if any effect.
