The effect of planting density on tree growth, yield and root distribution in pear orchard

The method for high-density cultivation in pear var. Danbae have been evaluated since 1976. Train systems used were modified leader type with the treatment 41 to 83 trees per 10a and Y system with that of 165 to 330 trees per 10a. In the closer planting density, the development of trunk circumference and top and rot dry weight were reduced but T/R ratio and leaf area index were increased. With the closer planting density, it resulted in the higher yield during the productive years. There was a tendency that the yield was increased as the trunk cross-sectional area or percent canopy occupation increased. During the first 9 years there was no difference in fruit weight among the different densities but thereafter the densities of 165 and 330 trees per 10a produced somewhat smaller fruits
