Grain overload, or lactic acid indigestion, is a common cause of death in goats. It is caused by a sudden change of diet to include large amounts of a feed, usually grain, high in fermentable carbohydrate which the rumen fails to digest properly. It is advisable always to increase the grain content of the die gradually, to enable the rumen to adapt.
