Performance of S.C. white leghorn fed cassava-based rations [Philippines]

This study was conducted from July 1984 to June 1985 to measure the effect of cassava-based rations to the growth, livability and laying performance of S.C. [single-combed] white leghorn. A total of 180 day-old chicks were distributed to six treatments replicated three times, with 10 birds per pen. Ration treatments were: 40% yellow corn (YC), 32% YC + 8% cassava meal (CM) + 24% YC + 16% CM, 16% YC +24% CM, 8% YC + 32% CM, and 40% CM. The starter, grower and layer rations were formulated to contain 21% CP and 2300 Cal/kg M.E. and 3.5% Ca, respectively. Starter period was for 55 days, grower period 140 days. Layers were1464 individually fed with 10 replications per treatment. Ration treatments were made as isonitrogenous and isocalorie as possible. Data showed that gains in weight during the starter period were better on all corn ration, although those on all cassava ration were not far behind (478 vs 434 g). Feed apparently consumed increased significantly with the level of cassava meal in the ration of growing pullets.
