A study was conducted to investigate the impact of subsurface drainage of agricultural lands on flood discharge. The model DRAINMOD has been used in this investiga1779tion. It has the capability of simulating on a day-to-day, hour-to-hour basis the water table position, soil water content, drainage, ET and surface runoff in terms of climatological data, soil properties, crop parameters, and the drainage system. The basis of the model is a soil water balance in the soil profile. To derive catchment discharges, DRAINMOD had to be incorporated in a runoff-concentration model. A hydrological approach proved to be appropriate. Once this concept has been verified by real catchment data, the effects of subsurface drainage on flood discharge have been studied by varying soil properties and drainage system layout. The results of a 22-year continuous simulation were analized statistica
