Changing of concepts in nutrition information, education and communication

Nutrition education has been recognized as an intervention in the prevention of malnutrition particularly among the so-called vulnerable groups. However, a broader framework for understanding the dynamics of poor nutrition equally requires a perspective that goes beyond mere dissemination of information and persuasion and the use of western models. Nutrition education should now be oriented to development thrusts enabling interaction between and among the subjects of the nutrition program, policy makers and planners at all levels. A restructuring in philosophy, approach, content, methodology and evaluation is called for in viewing nutrition education as problem-solving and decision-making processes to produce lasting effects. The successful utilization of nutrition information demands consideration of the environment in which this operates. A model for interactive nutrition education is presented. The model will help ensure the active participation of those who should and could assist in decision-making as well as provide access to the information thereby produced.
