Nineteen carabao heifers, about 5-6 years old, were individually confined in pens. Four levels of TDN [total digestible nutrient], namely 80, 90, 100 and 110% were used while DM [dry matter] and DP [digestible protein] were held "constant". The Indian standards of nutrient requirements for buffaloes/cattle were used as guides. All animals were fed corn-stover silage and concentrate mixtures. D1394igestion trials were conducted on the rations. The data indicates that the maintenance requirements for the average carabao heifer weighing 294.1 kg are as follows: DM is 4.62 kg or 65.06 g/W 0.75 kg per day; DP is 241.1 g or 3.39 g W 0.75 kg per day, TDN is 2.55 kg or 35.88 g/W 0.75 kg per day. The TDN equivalent is 618.6 KJ ME/W 0.75 kg per day. For maintenance, mature carabao heifers probably require 20% more DP and 5% more DM and TDN than the Indian riverine buffaloes to reach corresponding body weights at specified a
