Comparison of various mulches in the control of Rhizoctonia leaf rots in Cai Xin

Locally available mulching materials of black plastic, cocopeat, paper shreds and spent cotton waste were tested as cultural control for Rhizoctonia leaf rots in Cai Xin. Average of four consecutive croppings showed that spent cotton waste, cocopeat and black plastic effectively reduced disease loss to 13.6%, 14.3% and 16.5% respectively compared to control which averaged 27.3% loss. Marketable yields were significantly increased for these three mulched treatments. Shredded paper was unsuitable because of phytotoxic effects on the plants. Disease loss under protected netting was 9.1% but yields were low due to inadequate light. Soil sclerotia counts were lower in plots under protected netting and cotton waste
