The total sugar content in the pericarp followed the pattern of fruit growth. During the early stages of growth, reducing sugars like glucose and fructose predominated. Sucrose appeared at the start of second phase of growth and thereafter continued to increase along with reducing sugars untill picking maturity. In seeds the sugars were low at the beginning but increased steadily with the advancement in maturity, and then stabilized during the later period of growth
