Addition of panthotenic acid for possible shortening of withholding period in sulfonamide treated chicks

Previous or simultaneous giving of pantothenic acid to chickens brings about acetylation of sulphadimidine from 8.8% found in the control to 12.3% and 14.1% with previous addition of 200 and 600 ppm of calcium pantothenate in the feed. Giving sulphadimidine over 7 days at the age of 3 weeks results in acetylation on the level of 12.5%, which is more than in the control (8.8%). Previous or simultaneous giving of calcium pantothenate with sulphadimidine results in different acetyl sulphadimidine level in blood than that in the control. The phenomena observed in chickens cannot apply to layers because with them sulphadimidine piles up in eggs.
