Up to now, there is a lack of wide-spread systematic investigations on the content of pesticides in ground water in the Federal Republic of Germany. Measurements of random ground water samples with modern analytical methods have shown that 30 of the about 50 precise determinable pesticides exceed the future drinking water limits of 0,1 g/l legal after October 1989. Among them are 22 herbicides, 3 nematicides and 4 insecticides. The highly polar growth regulants are not detectable in trace concentrations. All waters are menaced by the long time accumulation and leaching of persistent pesticide compounds, in particular watersheds with special hydrogeological conditions. Polar and therefore also mobile compounds are not or unsufficiently retained by water treatment processes; they may reach even the drinking water. Therefore a prohibition is required for all those pesticides, which may reach the groundwater or drinking water.
