The stability of mineral sealing diaphragms is closely linked to their elastic deformation ability. Brittle characteristics can lead to faults and leakage, by minor deformations such as settling. This mechanism of failure has to be anticipated with mineral materials compacted in a wet condition on the dry side of the proctor curve. This theory is valid for soils of great elasticity like clay as well as soils with slight elasticity like loam, silt and mixed soils. If the mineral material is compacted with a water content on the wet side of the proctor curve it will keep its elasticity. Settling is followed without damage to the membrane. In this way, the uniform structure of the soil is conserved which ensures the immediate sealing properties.
