Practical experiences with herbicide- and insecticide-free crop edges as considered by farmers

Since 1986 on a farm in the Odenwald (Hesse, FRG) an increasing number of herbicides- and insecticide-free crop edges was established in crop fields. There always were more arable weeds in the unsprayed crop edges than were in the field. In some cases cleaver (Galium aparine) damaged the harvest. Treshed corn from the unsprayed crop edges was contaminated with a lot of weed seeds. However this caused no problems for it concerned only a small amount of the complete yield. In future the width of herbicide- and insecticie-free crop edges should be handled more variabily to make mechanical treatment easier. Small unsprayed parts in beet and maize fields showed that too many arable weeds emerged and therefore reduced the yield, so that these crops are unsuited for unsprayed crop edges. Most of the farmers would understand and support the establishment of herbicide- and insecticide-free crop edges and other biotopes if they create and preserve habitats for endangered communities of plants and animals
