Structural features of hair in Carpathian wolf (Canis lupus) raised in captivity

A qualitative and quantitative microscopic study was performed on the skin and hair of Carpathian wolf raised in captivity. Skin and hair samples were processed by means of adequate histological means. As with other species of furred animals, the epidermis is thin; the derm displays a shallow papillar stratum; the reticulate derm is well represented forming thick walls around follicular patches together with blood vessels, nerves, arrector pilorum muscles, sebaceous and odorant glands. The hypoderm is well developed and displays a loose aspect. Follicular patches are composed, on average, of 2.8 ear follicles and 37.5 fluff follicles. On the level of sebaceous glands there has been noticed that, generally, a follicular patch is formed of three smaller patches. The follicles of the ear are usually placed at the periphery of the follicular patches being bordered by fluff follicles. The abundance of the connective tissue differentiates the follicular patches, this leads to reduction in the number of follicles to only 2655/cm3 but the large thickness of the hairs confers the image of a thick fur. The proportion of ears to fluffs is 1/13.3 allowing for a fairly good coverage of the fluffs by the ears
