Selective toxicity of organophosphorus insecticides to the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (Homoptera: Aphididae), and its parasitoid, Diaeretiella rapae (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae)

Effective management of the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae, on cabbage plants depends on adequate insecticide efficacy and conservation of its parasitoid, Diaeretiella rapae. Triazophos, profenofos, and malathion were each applied at several dosage rates in small field plots on cabbage plants to determine the lowest dosage rate that provided cabbage aphid control with the least adverse effects on the parasitoid. Triazophos and profenofos provided over 62 per cent and over 68 per cent cabbage aphid control, respectively, after 21 days of treatment, at rates as low as 120-150 g a. i./feddan for triazophos or at rates as low as 100-130 g a. i./feddan for profenophos, whereas malathion provided equal control at rates as low as 200-250 g a. i./feddan. At these lower rates, the insecticides selective for the cabbage aphid would favor the survival of the parasitoid, where minimum adverse effects on emergence and progeny reduction of parasitoids from mummified aphids were obtained by profenofos followed in descending order by triazophos and malathion
