Predictions of suitable harvest time in Swedish leys have largely been based on estimates of the reduction in protein content with time. A new model is proposed which is based on (1) the exponential decrease of protein with time, and (2) the rate of change with the protein content. The rate of change is expressed by a constant, which is estimated for each area from successive harvest data. The level of nitrogen content in the plant is affected by the actual nitrogen situation in the soil, and is estimated on each field each year with one or a few calibration samples. The model is validated with two independent data sets. The results show that this new model has a high prediction accuracy.
