Biological control of groundnut rust, Puccinia arachidis, by Trichoderma harzianum

Rust disease of groundnut caused by Puccinia arachidis was significantly reduced by Trichoderma harzianum on detached groundnut leaves. Pre-treatment with T. harzianum conidia resulted in a greater inhibition of germination percentage and germtube growth of P. arachidis than mixed/post-treatment. On detached groundnut leaves, both pre- and mixed treatments with the antagonist showed significant reduction in the number of rust uredosori/leaflet and number of uredospores/pustule as compared to post-treatment. T. harzianum colonized better on uredosori (16-day-old) which were post-treated with the antagonist than on pustules developed on pre- and mixed treated leaves. A phenol-like, folin-positive antifungal compound was separated from the 36-h-old germinating fluid of T. harzianum
