Evaluation of ten cool season turf groups cultivars in Alexandria area [Egypt]

Ten cool-season cultivars were evaluated under Alexandria environments. The chosen grass cultivars were in three groups : 1- Fescue spp. (Banner, Biljart, Fortress and Rebel) : 2-Pea Pratensis (Baron, Plush and Sydsport); 3- Lolium perenne (Barry, Omega and Yorktown). The following results could be concluded: In winter, Rebel variety (fescue) had the highest establishment rate, leaf area and fresh and dry weights. Both Baron and Plush varietes (Kentucky Bluegrass) had the highest total chlorophyll contents however, Baron was superior to Plush. Both Fortress cv. (fescue) and Yorktown cv. (Ryegrass), were superior to the others. Generally in autumn and winter seasons Kentucky blue grass cultivars had the highest visual evaluation score and total chlorophyll. They may be recommended to be used as a greenhome lawns. Fescue cultivars had the highest fresh and dry weights. We recommended to use them for quick playable surface, parks and fairways. Perennial ryegrass cultivars had the highest establishment rate and leaf area and it may be recommended to be used in play ground and atheletic fields.
