Indonesia's mangrove forests and their problems

Mangrove forest as an ecosystem generally exists along the coast and estuary. In Indonesia mangrove forest is estimated at 4.25 million hectares, consisting of 77 to 88 species from 21 to 37 families. Mangrove forests function as land protector from salt intrusion, industrial pollution, erosion, wind and wave breaker. Mangrove forest also appears to be a potential sorce of national revenue from its wood products as well as from fisheries. The wood is greatly needed for building materials, charcoal, wood chips for pulp and paper, and tanning material. Mangrove forests also function as egg-laying places for shrimps, fish nursery and feeding ground for various fishes and crabs. Concurring with population increases, mangrove forest experienced pressures from other uses such as land conversion into agriculture and settlements. This paper presents some problems related to the mangrove forests and identifies solutions to the problems.
