The present study involved the identification, interrelation and analysis of the main body of knowledge on the uses and current utility among different groups of tropical forest resources in southeastern coastal Mexico. The fiel study results supported the hypothesis that formal development programs wrongly ignore the everyday knowledge of local inhabitants, whose customs and traditions often contein valuable insights into forestry management which could be useful in attaining the integral development goals put forth in official projects.
