[Nutritive value of three varieties of colza Brassica spp. in the diet of chickens]

In August of 1982, two experiments were conducted at the livestock Experimentation Center in Chapingo, Mexico, with the aim of determining the nutritive value of varieties Zephyr and Oro, species B. napus L. and Echo of the B. campestris L. colza seed. The first experiment lasted three weeks, during which colza seeds were used as the sole source of 15 percent protein in semi-purified diets. Soybean paste furnished the protein for the control diet. The results of this study indicated that the Echo variety had the best nutritive value, with average weight gains of 129.07 and 477.73 g; 466.48 and 853.89 g in feed consumption and 3.62 and 1.82 in feed conversion, respectively, for the first and second experiments. The Oro and Zephyr varieties presented a high glucosinolate content, 25.0 ppm, which reduced the utilization of the feed consumed and prevented the normal development of the birds. The high erucic acid content of the Echo variety was not a determinant factor in feed assimilation. None of colza varieties studied is a complete substitute for soybean in diets for fattening chickens.
