[Effect of storage temperature on the stability of cyanide in blood samples of goat]

Cyanide poisoning of animals is frequently suspected in Indonesia. Therefore it is important to know the rate of disappearance of cyanide from sample materials submitted to the Research Inst. for Animal Diseases (RIAD) in Bogor for analysis. Whole goat blood was spiked with cyanide to contain 24.9 mikromol/l, a concentration similar to that might occur in a poisoning case. The blood was divided into 3 parts and stored in closed tubes at room temperature (27 deg C, or RT), 10 of -20 deg C for up to 4 weeks. Cyanide was measured by spectrophotometric method. Results showed that cyanide levels in blood stored at 27 deg C, 10 C and -20 C at week 1 of storage were: 5.5; 18.5; and 20.5 mikromol CN-/l respectively. After 2 weeks of storage the cyanide levels were 4.0; 16.7 and 19.3 mikromol CN-/l respectively. It was concluded that rapid loss of cyanide is observed from blood stored at room temperature but at 10 and 20 deg C the cyanide levels are significantly (P 0.05) more stable.
