Ecology of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv trifolii 2668 and its plasmids

Strains of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv trifolii able to resist seed coating process and produce viable cells and able to fix atmosphere nitrogen in symbiotic association with a plant are used in the study. The study examines how some of these strains could have arisen by determining the ability of 2668 to conjugate with other bacteria. The conclusions were (i) the symbiotic plasmid R. leguminosarum bv trifolii 2688 is self transmissible and has a broad host range of recipients in which it is fully effective (ii) the frequency of transfer is relatively high and (iii) the transfer of pSym in the soil means that "new" rhizobial strains could be generated. Whether these "new" rhizobium will compete with the rhizobial inoculant is unclear
