Recreational hunting in future management of wild animals

Recent ecological research has shown that browsing and grazing may not be as incompatible with New Zealand's indigenous vegetation as was once thought. After considerable vegetation damage had occurred during the period of peak numbers, the wild animals were classified as pests, and official campaigns and commercial exploitation have acheived a high degree of control in most areas. Recreational hunters can effectively control wild animals in easily accessible areas, although recent surveys have indicated a decrease in the number of young hunters. Since the future of the commercial venison industry is uncertain and could lead to a greater dependence on recreational hunters for control, measures are needed to recognise the role of recreational hunting and to encourage recruitment of young hunters
