Evaluation of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) seed quality as influenced by delayed drying of harvested plants

An experiment was conducted at the Seed Technology Laboratorium of the Malang Research Institute for Food Crops in September 1987 to examine the effect of delaying sundrying for two, four or six days on the soybean varieties Tidar and Wilis. Drying immediately after harvest served as a control and treatments were combined in a factorial design in three replications. The viability and the vigour of the seeds were tested using the "sand method". Varieties were grown at Kendalpayak Experimental Station. There was an interaction between varieties and delay in drying for the germination percentage and the sprout length. Wilis showed a lower germination percentage (51 percent compared to 83 percent) when drying was delayed for six days. Tidar showed less vigour as expressed by length of the seedlings when drying was delayed for four or more days (18 cm compared to 21 cm). Delaying drying for six days significantly reduced the germination rate and the vigour of seedlings of both varieties as expressed in the length of the hypocotyls and the primary roots. It was concluded that Tidar (smaller seed size) germinate better than Wilis (larger seed size).
