The forests and grasslands of the upper Waitaki River catchment were assessed for wild mammal population densities and to assess browsing impact during the summer of 1984-1986. The principle vegetation types are described and a few areas of outstanding beauty and scientific value identified. It is concluded that today wild animal impact is insignificant but that from domestic stock remains a serious cause for concern
