Effects of nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.) competition on the growth and yield of sugarcane in Java (Indonesia)

Studies on purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L) competition on the growth and yield of sugarcane, were carried out in Pasuruan and Jatiroto from December 1977 until March 1980. Nutsedge-cane competition trials were conducted in the Reynoso and mechanized fields. Nutsedge density alone and nitrogen application rates conducted in the field and glass house, respectively. Nutsedge competes with sugarcane, and decreases the number of cane stalks and cane yield at 6 month of age. The maximum yield reduction due to nutsedge competition were 30.4-34.6 percent in Reynoso and 1.2-6.6 percent in mechanized fields. Sugarcane critical period toward nutsedge competition was between 6 and 10 week. The initial nutsedge density at planting which reduces the number of cane shoots, height and cane yield at 6 months are 8.25 plants per m2. The nutsedge plants will produce an average 19-20 percent foliage coverage between 4 and 10 weeks, and finally reduces the yield by at least 9 percent. Higher initial nutsedge density also delays the tillers formation for 4 to 6 weeks. Additional Nitrogen at low nutsedge density (50 plants/m2) increases the cane competition ability, and at high density (200 plants/m2) decreases its competitive ability.
