A floristic study of mangrove forest in Segara Anakan

The mangrove forest of Segara Anakan, is the largest mangrove forest in Java. It has very important scientific as a field laboratory for biology and forestry investigation. By using transects, 23 species were recorded and grouped into 14 families. The common species found here were Avicennia alba, Aegiceras comiculatum, Bruguiera gymnorhiza, B. parviflora, Rhizophora apiculata, R. mucronata, and Sonneratia caseolaris. The undergrowth plants commonly found are Acanthus icilifolius, Derris heterophylla, and Sarcolobus banksii. Sonneratia caseolaris dominated the Pekalongan area. It grew abundantly at the front part, whereas at the back part Aegiceras corniculatum developed well substituting for mangroves which have never existed. Rhizophora apiculata dominated the Karang Anyar and South of Majingklak areas. The highest diversity index of seedlings was 0.69 in the North of Citanduy area. The highest diversity index of sapling was 0.78 in Karang Anyar whereas the highest diversity index of trees was 0.71 north of Citanduy. The forest has been damaged because of illegal cutting and generally consists of saplings. The tree stumps within the transects were identified and the number of individuals of each diameter class was counted. The volumes of Brouguiera spp. and Rhizophora spp. trees with minimum diameter 7 cm and minimum height 6 m within the transects were estimated, whereas the volumes, the diameter class, and the use of the trees cut found in Muara Dua, Karang Anyar and Cibeureum were recorded.
