This paper reviews the present position and the outlook for nitrogen worldwide in the short term, then moves on to review the New Zealand situation and its potential. It concludes that in New Zealand economic constraints are such that it is unlikely that any major new uses, or major expansions of present use, of nitrogen fertilizer will be generated in the agricultural sector for some time to come
