The experiment studied the use of centro and setaria in the mixed cropping with maize. In the village area especially in the dry land area, corn is the main food for farmers after rice. In order to increase their income, they sometimes rear cattle and food crops. The use of forage crops, including legumes and grasses in the mixed cropping with crops like maize is still very limited. In order to get information on the use of forage in the mixed cropping with maize, a factorial experiment in randomized block design with two factors, i.e. cropping combination and plant density, was conducted on latosol soil at Tajur Experiment Farm, Bogor Agricultural University. The results showed that maize monoculture gave the highest maize yield, but gave the lowest forage production. Although the mixed cropping between maize and setaria gave the highest forage production (could increase carrying capacity nearly to eight animal unit/ha/year), the such cropping supressed corn yield of 80 percent. The cropping between maize and centro gave forage production equal to 1.39 animal unit/ha/year without supressing statistically the yield corn. Lower maize yields were obtained with high density of planting space.
