Use of nitrogen fertilizer for intensive dairy production
1989
Roberts, A.H.C. | Thomson, N.A. (Taranaki Agricultural Research Station, Hawera (New Zealand))
Nitrogen (N) fertilizer responses in South Taranaki, New Zealand, dairy pastures, measured by small-plot trial techniques, were largest to September/October applications, with lesser responses to late winter (July/August) application. Within these application times, efficiency of response was maximised with N application rates between 10-50 ka N/ha applied to pastures with a herbage mass of 2200 kg dry matter/ha or greater which were spelled for up to 42 days before first defoliation. A further experiment comparing two dairy herds and designed to use nitrogen fertiliser to fill the post-calving feed deficit and to maximise the conservation of supplementary feed for use during any period of summer feed deficit shows that the use of N fertiliser applications in intensive dairy systems is profitable
