Initial research into surface erosion should be directed to measurement of soil loss under field conditions using the radiometric tracer caesium-137. A centralised system of recording and collating information on localised erosion events should be set up within the Division of Land and Soil Sciences. An assessment of soil erosion hazard, based on the Universal Soil Loss Equation, should be undertaken. Research on the effects of soil loss properties and hence productivity, and the effects of management practices on soil loss, should proceed if soil loss is found to be significant
