Variable working widths on plows - advertising ploy or sound useful technology?

Estler, M. (Technische Univ. Muenchen, Freising (Germany, F.R.). Pflanzliche Produktion, Bereich Technik)
Until now, during ploughing there have often been problems in achieving a smooth, high load of the tractor's engine under varying operating conditions, (i.e. different soils, flat or hilly land) as a prerequisite for attaining a high performance. Modern ploughs with continuously adjustable working width make it possible to eliminate this disadvantage and further to alter the working effect, the width of the furrow and the depth-width-ratio exactly to the existing, farm specific requirements. The economic benefits in relation to the necessary investment requirements have not been established yet.
