Biomediators in chloroplasts of higher plants, 4: Reception by photosynthetic membranes

Cholinic ester acetylcholine and biogenic amines dopamine, adrenaline and noradrenaline can participate in the intracellular regulation of ion permeability and photophosphorylation of chloroplasts. The substances perhaps take part in intracellular chemical signalization as intratransmitters between plasmalemma and organelles and between organelles as well, similarly as they function as neurotransmitters or neuromediators in synaptic contacts between animal cells. Acetylcholine, noradrenaline, and adrenaline were found both in cytoplasm and in plastids. In order to know how photosynthetic membrane can "recognize" chemical signals, it should be reasonable to propose the existence of special receptors sensitive to the mediators. There were some attempts to demonstrate the features of cholinoreceptors in plants using the acetylcholine-sensitive reactions: 14C-acetate sodium uptake by roots, ethylene production by leaf discs, and Na+ efflux from envelopes of intact chloroplasts. The presence of adrenoreceptors in plants was studied using the noradrenaline-sensitive processes: cytoplasmic streaming and membrane potential in Nitella cells. The researchers used a pharmacological method for treatment of plants by agonists and antagonists of biomediators. The aim of the work was to study chemoreceptors in chloroplasts. The test reaction for that was the stimulation of photophosphorylation sensitive to acetylcholine and biogenic amines.
