Groundsels (Senecio nemorensis ssp. fuchsii and S. integrifolius) as natural hosts of tomato black ring virus

Spontaneous infection of the two groundsels, Senecio nemorensis ssp. fuchsii and S. integrifolius, occurring in forest ecosystems, is caused by the tomato black ring virus (TBRV). In the former species, the infection with this virus occurs in almost all localities where the groundsel grows, i.e. from 200 to 1500 m above sea level. The dissemination of the disease in forests should be caused by seed transmission of the virus. In our repeated experiments with seedlings grown from seeds from severely infested plants 6 and 8 per cent of young plants were demonstrated to be infectious. TBRV infection of S. integrifolius was demonstrated only in plants found in three localities close to the city of Kladno. Both groundsel species are new hosts of the virus.
