Tolerance of Auxerois blanc grapevine variety to winter frosts

At the beginning of the winter 1988-1989, we evaluated the stability of the tolerance of the Auxerois blanc variety buds to winter frosts according to their viability after three graded frost stresses. The frost stresses were preceded by the exposure of one-year shoots with buds to the temperature of -10 degrees C for 72 hours and then to 12 degrees C for the same time. After three frost stresses, we found Auxerois blanc variety buds to have approximately the same high stability of the tolerance to frost after winter warm spells as the Riesling variety has. 59.7 per cent of the Auxerois blanc and 54.7 per cent of the Riesling varieties buds were budding on the average after three stresses. The mean actual frost hardiness values of both varieties are the same, too. 69.9 per cent of the Auxerois blanc and 69.2 per cent of the Riesling varieties buds were budding on the average in two terms after six frost stresses. On the basis of above-mentioned results of the frost tolerance as well as relatively high grape yields for a first-quality wine production, we recommend to include the Auxerois blanc variety in determined variety tests and utilize it in intra- and inter-species hybridization in CSFR.
