In 1987-1989 field trials were conducted in a maize growing region to study the effect of three sowing rates of alfalfa (3, 6, 9 million of germinative seeds per ha) on weed infestation of the stand in the first cut in the year of sowing. The degree of weed infestation was dependent, first of all, on the year and the lucerne sowing rate. The lowest weed infestation was recorded in 1988 with the sowing rate of 9 million germinative seeds per ha. The concentration capacity was increased by which was especially high during sowing and initial growth of lucerne. The highest natural weed infestation was observed at the sowing rate of 3 million germinative seeds per ha on an average of three years. With decreasing number of weeds, the weight per weed increased with no respect to the sowing rate of lucerne. When herbicides were applied, this did not lead to any increase in the total dry matter yield. As far as weed control is concerned, the sowing rate of 7 to 7.5 million germinative seeds is sufficient to be applied in stands more infested with weeds.
