Improved utilization of rice bran: A Rapid field method for estimating hull content

Recent research has shown that when rice bran is used in animal feed in Indonesia,the most important adverse factor is the variable level of rice hull included with the bran. The work reveals a real need for a rapid effective method to assess the hull content of a rice bran sample. We present a method using acid phloroglucinol to obtain differential staining. This enables the hull content of a rice bran sample to be accurately determined by visual assessment in the field. The method is simple to carry out, rapid and very inexpensive (about Rp 20,- per analisys).
